Before the holiday, IK3A’s English teacher Amy held an English open class about space. IK3A has been following the IEYC unit “Blast Off” for the month of April, and Amy taught an interesting lesson about space.
Throughout the month students have learned words relating to space and concepts of space in English. Amy used many engaging tools and games to help the children identify and talk about things in space. They took turns playing the roles of the earth and moon to demonstrate how the earth goes around the sun, and the moon goes around the earth.
After the lesson the English teachers met to discuss the lesson. The teachers spoke about how space is a good topic because
children are interested in the natural world and become more engaged. They also discussed how children can benefit from learning other subjects, such as science, in conjunction with English. This can improve not just the children’s English, but their understanding of other subjects as well.
